1. i am using the art piece \american gothic\ by grant wood which features a farmer and his wife in front of a simple farmhouse.
2. there is a significant use of pattern within this painting with the daughter’s dress and the window curtains in the house.
3. vertical line is very integral to this painting. it is almost rigid how the couple stands so straight and behind them a, as most houses are, straight and plain blue sky without clouds.
4. woods use of vertical line and color choice contribute to the \drab\ plainness of the painting. this was, of course, the intention to show the monotony of rural living.
5. this painting does not evoke joy or some other emotion but could make the viewer feel wonder for the family’s lifestyle, sadness for the daughter (perhaps looking away longing for something more), or comfort in the tradition of farm life. this painting highly depends on the viewers perspective but was intended as a commentary on midwestern living.
