daily reading achilles heel
once upon a time there was a beautiful sea goddess by the name of thetis. a mortal king, banished from his country, fled to a new land where he fell in love with the sea goddess. his name was peleus. peleus wanted to capture thetis through trickery and help from zeus. the two were married. they then had a son. thetis named him achilles. achilles was mortal because although his mother was a goddess, his father was mortal. thetis loved her son very much and wanted to make him immortal like her. she took her baby son and holding him by the heel, dipped him in the river styx, a special river in greek mythology that separated the living from the dead. alas, she forgot to dip his heel twice, thus causing the part of his heel that she held to remain mortal.
achilles was the bravest, strongest, the most handsome of all warriors. he was the most valiant warrior in the famous trojan war. ultimately, though, another warrior from the opposing army shot achilles in the spot that did not get touched by the river styx. he was shot in his weak spot. achilles was immediately killed on the battle field.
today each of us is known to have an achilles heel, or a weak area in ourselves. the story comes from the greek mythological story of achilles.
