what do we mean by \strategies\? strategies arent about what specific career decisions you should make. they are about how you can make those important decisions. strategies are tools that help you to keep the \big picture\ in mind when you make a decision. strategies help you decide on a future goal and think about the steps you can take now that will help you achieve it.
when you make decisions thinking about what effect your choices right now will have on your long term goals, you are thinking strategically.
what you will learn in the career strategies course
the career strategies course is twenty lessons divided into five major sections:

• jobs vs. careers: what is the difference between a job and a career, and why does that matter?
• building assets: what are your personal assets? how can you build your assets, and how does that help build your career?
• choosing a career: how do you decide which career is right for you?
• education and training: which education and training programs will advance your career goals? how do you compare education programs?
• finding and applying for jobs: how do you find out about job openings? how can you make the best impression when you apply and interview for jobs?

your career decisions will determine the amount of money you make and the way that you spend about a third of your waking hours. but most importantly, your career is central to how you think about yourself, and how you see your position and purpose in life.
who the career strategies course is for
career strategies is meant for all people, no matter where they are on their career path. not every lesson may be of immediate use to you, but may well be of use to you at some later point in your career.
and it may be of immediate use to someone you know. thinking strategically about careers will not only help you, it will also enable you to help others. most people get their career advice from family, friends, and acquaintances. as you learn the skills to think strategically about career paths, you will become a resource for the people in your life. giving people advice not only helps them, but also helps you think about your own career choices.

you will see career strategies lessons throughout the csm course. these lessons will give you strategies that help you think about your career, no matter where you are on your career path.
