The most important aspect of my identity to me is my identity as a first-generation college student. This label feels like a core part of who I am because it ties together my family's sacrifices and my own drive to create new opportunities for myself and the people I love.
Unsurprisingly, this same aspect affects my life the most. It shapes nearly every big decision I make, from choosing my major (I picked a field with clear career stability to honor my family's support) to how I manage my time—balancing part-time work to contribute to household costs while keeping up with my coursework. It also affects how I interact with peers; I often feel a responsibility to represent my family's hard work in everything I do, which pushes me to stay focused but also adds occasional pressure.
I had mixed feelings about this activity. I enjoyed thinking deeply about my identity as a first-generation student because it made me pause and appreciate how far I've come, which I don't do often enough. However, it was also challenging at times—thinking about the pressure I feel made me confront stress I usually push aside to stay productive. Overall, though, it felt meaningful to unpack these parts of myself.
