achilles heel
once upon a time there was a beautiful sea goddess by the name of thetis. a mortal king, banished from his country, fled to a new land where he fell in love with the sea goddess. his name was peleus. peleus used trickery and help from zeus to capture thetis. the two were married. they then had a son. thetis loved achilles very much and wanted to make him immortal like her. achilles was mortal because although his mother was a goddess, his father was mortal. thetis took her baby son and holding him by the heel dipped him in the river styx, a special river in greek mythology that separated the living from the dead. alas, she forgot to dip his heel twice, thus causing the part of his heel that she held to remain mortal.
achilles was the bravest, strongest, the most handsome of all warriors. he was the most famous warrior in the famous trojan war. ultimately, though, another warrior from the opposing army shot achilles in the heel, the spot that did not get touched by the river styx. he was shot in his weak spot. achilles was immediately killed on the battlefield.
today each of us is known to have an achilles heel, or a weak area in ourselves. this saying comes from the greek mythological story of achilles.
- what is the author’s purpose for writing this passage?
a. to tie together the foundation of many of our english language words to greek mythology
b. to make you hate thetis for being a bad mother
c. to admire someone as handsome and strong as achilles
d. to feel sorry for achilles having a weak spot on his body
- which of the following passage is an opinion?

b. each of us is known to have an achilles heel.
c. the saying was derived from the greek mythological story of achilles.

- For the pre - position question, "with" is used to show who James went shopping with, and "during" is used to refer to the time of the date.
- The sentence "have you ever read the book tales of a fourth grade nothing" should be "Have you ever read the book Tales of a Fourth - Grade Nothing" (book title in italics).
- The sentence "We will be eating dinner at your grandparents house tonight mom called." should be "We will be eating dinner at your grandparents' house tonight, Mom called."
- "Cutting a rug" is an idiom meaning dancing. In the context, "He was dancing good" (should be "well") is the correct interpretation. For the reading comprehension:
- The author's purpose is to tie together the foundation of English language words to Greek mythology.
- An opinion is a subjective statement. "Each of us is known to have an Achilles Heel, or a weak area in ourselves." is an opinion as it is a general statement that may not be objectively provable for every single person.
