special olympics started in 1968 but wasnt recognized by the us olympic committee until two years later. special olympics is an international program that provides athletes with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to compete in year - round sports. the first special olympic games took place in chicago, illinois, during the summer. about one thousand athletes participated in 1968. eventually, the games expanded to other locations outside the united states. currently, a total of 204 countries participate in special olympics. the countries are grouped by regions, totaling six regions.
