Question
introduction
in this unit we will examine the cells that are the \building blocks\ of your body using the micro - slide - viewer, microslides and text folders.
read and follow the directions for the use of the micro - slide - viewer and the microslide on the envelope attached to the text folder and holding the slides.
examine each slide and study the description in the text folder. after studying each slide and the printed text, answer the question for that slide on this worksheet. if you dont know the answer, go on to the next slide and question. you may find the answer as you learn more about the subject. draw what you see in the space provided.
slide 1 - cheek cells
a. draw a cheek cell
b. label the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus
slide 2 - blood cells
a. there are 2 kinds of blood cells in this slide. they are
____________________
b. what is the function of the cells marked (a) and (b)?
____________________
c. what is the principal function of the other cells?

d. red blood cells contain a special chemical called ____________________
Slide 1 - Cheek Cells
Step1: Draw cheek cell
Draw a roughly circular - shaped cell with a smooth outer boundary representing the cell membrane. Inside, draw a large, round nucleus and fill the remaining space with a light - shading to represent the cytoplasm.
Step2: Label cell parts
Draw arrows pointing to the outer boundary and label it "Cell membrane", an arrow pointing to the central round part and label it "Nucleus", and an arrow pointing to the area between the nucleus and the cell membrane and label it "Cytoplasm".
Slide 2 - Blood Cells
Step1: Identify blood cell types
The two kinds of blood cells are red blood cells and white blood cells.
Step2: Functions of cells
Red blood cells (usually labeled as one type) are responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs. White blood cells are part of the immune system and help defend the body against infections and foreign substances.
Step3: Function of other cells
If (A) and (B) are red blood cells, the other cells (white blood cells) have the principal function of immune - defense. If (A) and (B) are white blood cells, the other cells (red blood cells) are for oxygen and carbon - dioxide transport.
Step4: Identify red blood cell chemical
Red blood cells contain a special chemical called hemoglobin.
