for this discussion i chose to formally analyze the work titled the kiss, by gustav klimt.
the overall subject is an exchange of intimacy between two individuals. we can recognize this by the expression of calm on the females face. the position as well is a familiar position associated with intimate expressions of affection.
the composition in many of klimt’s pieces are abstracted from things recognized in nature. one characteristic i immediately noticed when observing his piece is a sort of lack of background and horizon. however, he emphasizes with bright contrasting colors the main focal point, and the even brighter face of the women depicted.
those were some things i was able to identify with formal analysis, but i’m hoping to see other perspectives to further my understanding and appreciation.
