icp chapter 2.2 vocabulary review (24pts)
pretty simple. use my chapter 2 google slides to find the definitions. fill in text definitions below and then fill in something that represents an example of that or something to help you understand.
name branish hour 4
vocabulary term | definition | example or something that helps you remember.
physical property
viscosity
conductivity
Brief Explanations
Physical property
- Definition: A characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance's chemical identity (e.g., color, density, melting point, boiling point, hardness, etc.).
- Example or something to remember: The color of a copper wire (it's reddish - brown) is a physical property. You can observe the color without changing the copper into another substance. Another example is the density of water, which is $1\ g/cm^3$ at $4^\circ C$. We can measure this density without altering the chemical composition of water.
Viscosity
- Definition: A measure of a fluid's (liquid or gas) resistance to flow. The higher the viscosity, the slower the fluid flows.
- Example or something to remember: Honey has a higher viscosity than water. If you pour honey and water from a spoon, honey flows much more slowly. Another example is motor oil - different grades of motor oil have different viscosities, and thicker (higher viscosity) oils flow more slowly.
Conductivity
- Definition: The ability of a material to allow the flow of heat or electricity. For electrical conductivity, it's the ability to conduct an electric current; for thermal conductivity, it's the ability to conduct heat.
- Example or something to remember: Copper is a good electrical conductor. That's why it's used in electrical wires. For thermal conductivity, metal spoons conduct heat well - if you leave a metal spoon in a hot cup of coffee, the handle will get warm quickly. Wood, on the other hand, is a poor conductor (an insulator) of both heat and electricity.

Physical property
- Definition: A characteristic of a substance observable/measurable without changing its chemical identity (e.g., color, density, melting point).
- Example: Color of copper (reddish - brown) or density of water ($1\ g/cm^3$ at $4^\circ C$).
Viscosity
- Definition: A fluid's resistance to flow (higher viscosity = slower flow).
- Example: Honey flows slower than water; thick motor oil.
Conductivity
- Definition: Ability of a material to conduct heat or electricity.
- Example: Copper (electrical conductor, used in wires); metal spoon (thermal conductor, gets warm in hot coffee).
