Step3: In the stomach
Gastric juices containing hydrochloric acid and pepsin act on proteins in the food (if any). The acidic environment helps in food breakdown and kills some bacteria. But starches are not significantly digested here.
Step4: In the small intestine
Pancreatic amylase further breaks down remaining starches into maltose. Maltase then breaks maltose into glucose. Proteases and lipases also act on proteins and fats respectively. Nutrients are absorbed through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream.
Step5: Blood - sugar regulation
When glucose is absorbed into the bloodstream, blood sugar levels rise. The pancreas secretes insulin which promotes the uptake of glucose by cells for energy or storage as glycogen. If blood sugar levels drop, the pancreas secretes glucagon which stimulates the breakdown of glycogen into glucose to raise blood sugar levels.
