Question
read the letters to the editor. there are several questions about these letters.
1 i am writing in support of the proposal to hold a farmers market in the center of millersburg every tuesday. many of the surrounding towns hold similar markets once a week, and they are quite successful. local farmers, gardeners, crafters, and others have an inexpensive place to sell their products. customers have an easy and convenient way to gain access to fresh, community grown foods and flowers, and other local goods.
2 millersburg had a farmers market last year, but it was held on the lawn behind the town hall. parking was limited, and because the venue was hidden from the street, many people didnt realize it was there. setting up farm stands under trees and on the grass seemed like an effective plan until experts pointed out that all of the foot traffic on dry summer days compacted the soil and stressed the plants.
3 this year, organizers want to hold the market in the center of town, on the wide, grassy areas adjacent to sidewalks lining the main commercial area. at first this seems like a strange idea, but organizers have planned carefully. participants will have to limit the width of their display spaces to allow plenty of room for pedestrians to pass by. the speed limit in that area is already low (25 miles per hour), but signs will warn cars to slow down even more.
4 some local business owners worry that the farmers market will compete with them for business, but evidence from other parts of the country shows that this will not be the case. by attracting foot traffic, farmers markets have a proven record of increasing sales in nearby businesses. plus, there is plenty of parking downtown, so customers of the farmers market wont take valuable spaces away from other customers. tuesdays are usually slow business days in millersburg. organizers hope that the farmers market will turn downtown into a bustling hive, humming with activity!
5 just look at the tempting list of businesses that want to participate: hay
